Here are some quick studies I've been posting to my Facebook page each day. These paintings are anywhere between 30-80 minutes. A large part of my childhood was spent in New Mexico and Utah. They are two places I absolutely love. I wanted to catch some of those good old memories that sparked my imagination from the places my parents took my brother, sisters and I. I guess what I'm trying to say is that these places and ideas are special to me.

These are really good.
I was wondering, are most of your color studies from imagination entirely or do you often use some kind of reference. Like, what would you say your ratio of using a reference and not using a reference is?

I've spent a large portion of my childhood and vacations in New Mexico as well, and that makes me appreciate these studies so much more. They are beautiful and well done, and they capture the essence of the landscape in such areas very well!

CJ-If you look below at some of the other posts, i have laid out how i work. I usually paint from life on these studies but the ones above are out of my head while looking at a page of references. I usually gather a page that has 10-15 good reference images. from there i just paint out ideas and check myself with the references. Thanks for all your comments!
